I found out this morning that we will have to move from our home of over two years. It closes a chapter and begins a new one.
Our landlord, Rick Vincent, is a saint…really. When we moved in we thought that we’d be able to cover expenses. The reality is that we weren’t. Rick never even discussed putting us on the street and continued to treat us like his best tenant. I believe that our work is near and dear to his heart. I hope that we were always appreciative.
With the recession and Noblesville tax rates Rick has had a tougher and tougher time hanging on to his property. Last winter he put the house on the market and let us know that we were welcome to stay but things might be changing. We thanked him and told him, for the hundredth time, that we would vacate on a days notice if need be.
He’s lost two tenants since then. I’m not sure why. His rates are cheap and the location is great.
Yesterday he was able to lease all of the empty space in the building (including ours) to one tenant. The new tenant is well established and there is no reason to believe that they won’t be here for a very long time.
This morning I was kindly told to vacate…but with a proposal. We could use the huge basement, for free, if we finished the space. We’re good at construction. We need to build a few partitions, hand a ceiling and lights, skim the floor and paint the walls. It’s a lot to think about.
I’ve talked to the new tenant and he is great, too. He is a friend of ricks, understands our position and is willing to work with us.
Here’s the deal…at this moment in time. We need to vacate the Parlor Studio (Our nice room) in the next three weeks. He is giving us a tiny room for storage until vacate mid-October. I’m not sure when we can make basement space ready.
The bottom line is that Rick wants us in the building, on the porch and on the lawn. He just needs to collect rent for his space. Fair enough.
I’d appreciate your thoughts.
