I love lettering…always have.
Many of my favorite jobs have involved signs and lettering. I spent two summers in Maine running a youth program. Part of the job was signwriting for island activites. These signs were posted on the tiny post office where the entire community congregated to wait for the mail – fresh off the noon ferry – to be sorted. I knew that I was successful when signs were stolen before the advertised events.
Another favorite job was designing and writing signs for Marsh Supermarkets. Every Thursday evening I’d have 20 – 40 chalkboards to wash and bust out. It was a ball trying to find new ways to present pears, onions and pot roast.
Once I accumulaed enough birds to stock my table space at the INDIEana Handicraft Exchange I knew that it was time to think about a sign. I wanted to incorporate the same techniques that I’ve developed for bird carving and finishing into the piece. It’s not finished, yet, but the elements are painted. I’m please with the effect. Now for adding years of wear and tear and figuring out how it will be mounted to my display shelf.
