As we move forward on building the Folk School in the cellar of Noblesville’s Victorian house I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to what kind of space we need to create. I explored this in several earlier posts. The Sassafras Shop & Ethics of Folk Tourism come to mind.
The object is to create a space that:
- is unique
- recalls elements of folks perception of “folk” or Indiana traditional culture
- is affordable
Many of these criteria can be addressed by using local and re-used construction elements.
M recent re-exposure to the Brown county artists, especially photographer and writer Frank Hohenberger has sent me exploring for images of his creative space. I find, online, two photographs of his private study.
Take a moment and explore his creative space. It’s fascinating to step into this gentleman’ studio and snoop around. Click for larger images.
There are some great elements that fit into the Folk School space that is evolving in my head.
The first is dated February 1, 1932.
The second is dated 1938
