I was researching bent wood basket making and stumbled across this website. I don’t know much about the site or the folks that maintain it. It seems that they have problems maintaining a stock of traditional handmade items. I’m not really sure who is more bitter about the situation…the basket maker of the retailer.
Such a beautiful basket but I am sorry to say it is unavailable so I spare you the details on how we went to visit the maker, how he is working in his father-in-laws shop from the 20’s on belt operated machines, how he was a lovely man to talk to, how it took 8 emails and numerous calls to get the one basket…Why? Half the problem with craft these days is older craftspeople are retired and tend to think they are making craft as a favor to the rest of the world. They say they enjoy it but after years of feeling unappreciated they have become bitter and feel they are sacrificing themselves for the preservation of the object….
