I set out to produce a box for each of the women that I would be with on christmas: my wife, two daughters, step-daughter and Mom. By the time Santa was coming down the chimney I had seven boxes on hand. Since then I’ve build about 8 more.
Like many new projects it took a few days to figure out jigs and procedures. I’m an experienced wood bender (I do build boats and ukuleles) but each craft has its traditions and I wanted to think through the different schools of thought regading Shaker boxmaking.
I begun to develop Shaker boxmaking for a Folk School class. It seems that folks are fascinated with bending wood and these classes are popular elsewhere. They are also very easy to make (not that I’ve the patterns and jigs) and go together very quickly. Look for a weekend of boxmaking in march or April.
