This is a bird that I’ve been aware of most of my life, but have never spotted. When I was young in Maine the local folks called the cormorants coots — perhaps it has common usage to describe a black water bird.
I’ve two concerns with these shots. It’s evident that the coot’s bill has shrunk the profile is distorted. This is especially evident where the bill meets the head. I apologize for the distracting background, but my sketchpad isn’t large enough to serve as a backdrop.
