Yesterday I left a farmers’ market to visit an ATM. I later told my wife that I had heard a red bellied woodpecker near the bank.
“How did you know?”, asked my wife.
I had no answer. I just knew.
I’ve recently discovered that without any conscience effort I have become constantly aware of the bird conversations around me. As I write, from the Noblesville Square. I’m hearing chimney swifts, house sparrows, wrens, robins and (for a short time) a kestrel. If a new voice chimes in I know immediately and begin to tune in. As I am more aware of this background chatter the unknown voices are more apparent and are in a context I can build upon.
That does not mean I can bird by ear, but I’m hopeful that I’m developing an ear to learn to do so.
I’m working on another story. I’ll post tomorrow or Monday. Have a great holiday weekend!
