When I was a young man I became very interested in black and white photography. I set up a darkroom and learned to develop film and print my own black and white images.
I would spend hours looking through the fine print advertisements listing the used cameras, obscure film, and darkroom equipment offered by the big New York photo shops. I could never afford my dream equipment, but I did order some incidental items and was always pleased.
Last year I needed to purchase a digital SLR camera. I cut my teeth on a Canon AE-1 Program and wanted a similar camera. I quizzed I.U. folklorist, Thomas Richardson, about his equipment. He had photographed me and my work and I liked the results. He shared his thoughts on equipment. Buy used. Buy good. Spend your money on lenses.
Online, I went to the big NY camera houses and I found a Canon body I liked at B and H. They offered the best price and best shipping. I ordered the camera and have loved it! A B and H customer sales representative posted a comment on this blog telling me how glad she was that I had purchased the camera.
Late this summer my binoculars were taken from my car. (I didn’t lock up and the my binoculars are always on the seat.) It’s been tough. I rely on my binoculars to chase the birds that I draw and carve. These drawing and carving are part of my livelyhood. It’s been a long few months.
I put a few dollars aside and shopped for replacements today. I shopped Gander Mountain, Amazon, an online binocular “superstore”, L.L. Bean, Adorama (a NY camera house) and B and H .
Most had what I was looking for, a Nikon 7-15×35 Action VII Zoom Binocular. Prices were all over the place. B and H was the least expensive and offered free shipping. They promised a delivery date on Thursday (Today is Tuesday). I ordered the binoculars at 8:30 and they were shipped by 11:00!
Thirty loons and fifty grebes were spotted near Morse Beach, here in Noblesville, yesterday. I expect to be there at first light on Saturday with my new binoculars. Maybe I’ll learn to hide them under the car seat!
Check the comments, below. I told you these were good folks!
