About ten years ago I sponsored a series of hugely successful ukulele festivals, the MidWest UkeFests with my children’s uke group, The Key Strummers. We had a blast bringing the best ukulele teachers and entertainers from across the country to Indianapolis.
During this time we developed deep and meaningful relationships with these folks as well as the crowds (yes crowds) that came to see them.
I will never forget the morning of our first event when a performer appeared, uninvited (because we didn’t know of him — yet) with a cart of instruments and materials. He had driven most of the night from Milwaukee and really wanted to be part of the action.
Lil Rev was earnest and compelling (and talented) and we did manage to give him a set in our evening concert. The following years he was an invited headliner and teacher. We even brought him to Indy to host a house concert, share the stage at Orchard in Bloom and a blues festival in Bean Blossom.
It’s been years since I’ve talked with Rev. I’ve kept track of some of his activities. He’s mounted some extensive tours, married, had a child, published at least two books and began his own ukulele festival.
You have to experience a Lil Rev performance to really get Lil Rev. He’s a fine musician, but the magic is in his storytelling. He draws you in. You become part of his childhood, his parents, his family and most importantly his grandfather. Through song and story and audience participation you know these people and want to know them better. I always leave his performances like I’ve spent a very satisfying evening with a seldom seen friend. (Tonight that will truly be the case.)
Tonight he’ll be back for a low-key and early evening New Year’s Eve celebration in Noblesville. It will be wonderful to have him back with us.
I’ve been asked to open for him. I will be playing 2-3 tunes (a couple may be new to you) and hopefully will get in a little trombone. I don’t perform much anymore and this is a real treat.
