Right after I returned from my solo paddle of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) I purchased two antique atlas pages from (then) Indianapolis antique and artifact dealer Kristofer Bowman. The unmarked and undated pages included maps of the Adirondacks, the White Mountains, New York and New Jersey. I was interested in the former two maps as they related to the NFCT.
The map may date from before the organization of the Adirondack State Park. Old Forge, a current gateway to the region, is not included on the map. Also missing are many of the bodies of water that I paddled. Many of the ponds and lakes within the Adirondacks are manmade–to facilitate steamboat navigation and lumbering operations and to generate electricity — and sere constructed after this map was published.
Missing from this early map is the Fulton Chain of Lakes, Franklin Falls Pond and Union Falls Pond.
Sidenotes- I would be happy to send a 400dpi scan of this map to those that request it. Kristofer Bowman is now preparing to sell interesting artifacts from Grand Marais, MN at UpstateMN.
